Senegal Teacher Project

The Rotary Club of Tucker will provide a teacher for one year to a remote Senegal village. More to come as.info becomes available. Information below now available.

The JEF-JEL project was begun in the early 90's by Jennifer Broom and Kellie Lartique, peace corps volunteers who had served in Senegal, West Africa. Their purpose was to support Nbangane, a rural village in Southeast Senegal. The intent was to provide assistance in the areas of health, education and economics. Through the fund raising efforts of JEF-JEL, a two room school has been built.

Government support is very limited. .The Rotary Club of Tucker is providing for one year the salary of an English teacher to enhance the educational opportunities of pre-school students in the two room school(an addition is underway).

Locally, the School has become very popular for several reasons.. Primarily, it unencumbers women to work rather than attend children, it gives pre-school students a head start when they enter the National Educational System and the students in the program demonstrate higher levels of self-confidence than others.

The Rotary Club of Tucker believes this to be a sustainable project and through study of the project and monetary support has invested 40 hours of voluntary time and $1200.00 for the one years service of an English Teacher
